China Mobile International Corporation, Facebook, MTN global connect, orange, STC, Egypt Telecom, Vodafone and wiocc recently announced that they will cooperate to build 2africa, the most comprehensive undersea cable serving the African continent and the Middle East, and will also connect through East Africa and other undersea cables to expand their connection with Asia.
According to reports, 2africa, with a total length of 37000 km, will connect Europe (through Egypt to the East), the Middle East (through Saudi Arabia) and 21 landing points in 16 African countries. 2africa will provide much-needed Internet capacity and reliability in most of Africa, supplement the rapidly growing capacity demand in the Middle East, and support the further growth of 5g and fixed broadband access.
According to the plan, the system will be put into operation in April 2023, and its delivery volume will exceed the total capacity of all submarine cables serving Africa today. The design capacity of key parts of the system can reach up to 180tbps. Once completed, it will be one of the largest submarine cable projects in the world.
