According to the 2019 World Energy Outlook report issued by the International Energy Agency (IEA), three scenarios are analyzed for the prospects of various energy power generation: 1) Current Policies Scenario (CPS); 2) Stated Policy Scenario (SPS);
3) Sustainable Development Scenario (SDS).
So, what is the future of photovoltaic market in sunny Africa? In 2018, the cumulative installed capacity of African PV is only 4 GW (while China has reached 175 GW), accounting for 0.8% of the global installed capacity (495 GW).
——If the current policy is followed (CPS scenario), Africa's PV installed capacity will reach 62 GW in 2040, accounting for 2.5% of the global PV installed capacity.The average annual increase will be 2.6 GW in 2018-2040.
——If the commitments of the Paris climate agreement (SPS scenario) are fully implemented, Africa's PV installed capacity will reach 135 GW in 2040, accounting for 4.3% of the global PV installed capacity.The average annual increase from 2018 to 2040 will be about 6 GW.
——In accordance with the requirements of sustainable development goals (SDS scenario), Africa's PV installed capacity should reach 317 GW in 2040, accounting for 7.6% of the global PV installed capacity.In 2018-2040, 14 GW will be added annually.
